Center for the Homeless The Center for the Homeless is not a homeless shelter. While we have provided more than 700,000 safe nights and over 1.5 million meals to more than 60,000 men, women and children since our opening in December 1988, our focus is on providing not just life-saving, but life-changing services to each of our guests.

Our innovative service model offers homeless families and individuals an on-site structured, step-by-step process to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency. This revolutionary program relies on partnerships with every sector of the community and has been endorsed by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Soup of Success To empower women through education and resources, to build self-esteem, develop independence and improve quality of life. We sit down with individuals who have expressed a desire to help, and get to know them, discover what they are passionate about, and then plug them in where they can best and most happily use their gifts. Individuals have come forward and trained in computer skills, provided IT support, taught basic sewing skills, mentored, shared expertise, and provided lab assistance. We want to provide people with meaningful volunteer jobs that are a “good fit.” We have positions available that are suitable for individuals at any level of involvement, whether directly with the participants, behind the scenes, and/or out in the community. We can also accommodate entire groups of people. 574-523-1551

Elkhart Community Schools – CARES Program Currently, Elkhart Community Schools has over 1,000 people who graciously donate their time to serving the needs of our children. Over 400 of these volunteers are mentoring students through the ECS CARES Program, a program that pairs a volunteer with a student for 30 minutes each week. Often, CARES mentors and students form a friendship that lasts through the student’s time at ECS. Our CARES Program is always in need of additional volunteers, and each school in the district has a waiting list of children eagerly awaiting a volunteer mentor. Amy Haworth

Pet Refuge Pet Refuge is a not-for-profit “no-kill” animal shelter established in April 1978. Pet Refuge is run by volunteers for the placement of unwanted and abandoned pets into responsible permanent homes. We are totally dependent upon monetary and material donations from people like you in the community. There is a waiting list to intake all animals that come into our shelter. We recommend that while you have your cat or dog on our waiting list, you also try other options in trying to place them such as run an ad in the newspaper (please do not advertise for free). Also, check with family, friends, co-workers etc., to see if they can help you out. Screen potential interested parties for your pet and ask for references including a vet reference. Pet Refuge will try to help as many cats and dogs as possible; however, pet overpopulation is a problem in our community. 4626 Burnett Dr.
